Smoked Orange Hat

I had so much fun making the Smoked Orange Cardigan, and I had a bit of yarn left over, so I decided I needed to make a hat.

And then I still had a little yarn leftover and I STILL didn't want to stop, so I made another. This is a perfect way to play with the pattern a little before committing to a whole sweater.

Maybe it's the perfect way to try out this motif if you prefer smaller projects or have a single skein of yarn on hand. Either way, you've got options!

I love the contrast between the delicate leaves and the thick, elegant cables in this motif, and how the negative space here really adds some squish to the fabric. Plus, once you get into the rhythm of this pattern, it's really fun ro work.

You can knit yours with a flat brim (as shown in the natural gray), or with a deep folded edge (as shown in orange), and either way, this motif is just perfect on a hat. The flat brim option has you to line the ribbing up with the cable pattern at bottom, and both options feature crown shaping centered on the larger cables.

Yarn: Midwinter Yarns Black & Blue DK (100% Welsh Bluefaced Leicester wool; 230yds/210m per 3.53oz/100g skein). Samples shown knit in Welsh Mist without brim (natural black and white blend), and in Jamie with brim (orange).

If substituting yarn for any hat, choose a yarn with some memory. A subtle heather, tweed or a solid will show off the pattern best, and a wool or wool blend will give the look and feel of the original.

Gauge: Ribbed brim on smaller needles: 26sts/ 32rnds per 4”/10cm. Each repeat of the 19-stitch cable is approximately 3”/7.5cm wide and just over 1”/2.5cm deep.

Needles: US#5/3.75mm and US#6/4mm needles, or size to get gauge.

Sizes:

18(21)"/45.75(53.25)cm hat circumference

8(8.5)*/20.25(21.5) cm deep from cast-on edge to center of crown. Folded brim version is 10(10.5"/26.75cm deep, unfolded.

Hat can stretch to fit when worn.
