Smoked Orange Cardigan

$8.00

The Smoked Orange Cardigan is all about deep texture and vibrant color. I really enjoyed the contrast between the two elements in this combination, and just love how striking this simple cardigan is. With that in mind, I kept the details to a minimum so the attention would remain on the texture. A deep button band, an intentional hem, and bold lines along the front opening work perfectly here.

Smoked Orange is worked flat from the bottom up in one piece then split at armholes into two fronts and the back, which are then worked to shoulders. Once shoulders are seamed, sleeve stitches are picked up around armholes and worked in the round to cuff. Two small strips are worked upwards from shoulders and joined at center back neck for a crisp finish to the edging before button band is picked up around the front opening and worked flat to end.

Note that my sleeves have a loose, easy fit and the body on my sweater is quite cropped, but the pattern is written with notes so you can modify your fit in both the body and sleeves as you like.

Yarn: Midwinter Yarns Black & Blue DK, (100% Welsh Bluefaced Leicester wool, 230yds/210m per 3.5oz/100g skein) Color shown is Jamie.

If substituting yarn, use a worsted or heavy DK weight wool that works to gauge. Swatch in cable pattern, rib, and reverse stockinette. A solid, heather, tweed or semisolid will showcase both pattern and details. When using hand-dyed yarn, alternate skeins and watch for color pooling or a line when switching to a new skein. I love the subtle halo in this fiber and think this design would be gorgeous with a bit of mohair/suri involved for a bit of fuzz! Be sure to swatch alternate yarns for gauge and to be sure you like how they look in pattern.

Gauge: 22 sts/28 rows per 4"/10cm in cable pattern (body and sleeve) and 1x1 rib along button band, 20 sts/28 rounds in reverse stockinette on sleeve, all on larger needle. 24 sts/28 rounds in 1x1 rib at cuffs, on smaller needle. Each 17-st pattern repeat is just over 3”/7.5cm wide. All gauges based on final, blocked fabric.

Needles: US 6/4mm for cuffs only, US 7/4.5mm for remainder of knitting.

Sizes:

38.5(41.5,44.5,47.5,50.5,53.5)(56.5,59.5,62.5,65.5)"

97.75(105.5,113,120.5,128.25,136)(143.5,151,158.75,166.5)сm

Sizes reflect circumference at bust when worn buttoned, and are based on actual measurement of final blocked fabric. For fit shown, choose the size that allows for 4-6”/10-15.25cm of positive ease based on your actual bust. Sample shown worn with 5”/12.75 cm of positive ease and a cropped fit.

Yardage:

1200(1300,1400,1450,1500,1550)(1600,1700,1800,1900)yds

1100(1190,1280,1325,1375,1420)(1465,1555,1645,1740)m
