Teeling

$8.00

Teeling was a holiday gift for Gabriella! She's that modeling friend of mine who you might recognize.

When she mentioned to me that she coveted a simple, chunky hat with a brim, I figured it was high time to design something just for her. And as luck would have it, I had just returned from visiting my Magpie friends in MD with some skeins of squishy Quartet Bulky, so this went straight onto the needles!

I used classic lines and added a minimal amount of texture to show off the subtly dyed yarn. Crown shaping needed to be bold and eye catching. The brim had to be cozy. And voila!

Teeling is a quick, satisfying knit with thick ribs, seed stitch, and a great fit.

In fact, so satisfying that that after knitting two Teelings with my Quartet skeins, I still wanted more. My third sample was knit from stash in Bread and Butter Bun from Verb For Keeping Warm, and it proves that Teeling looks great with or without a folded brim.

Yarn: Magpie Fibers Quartet Bulky (100% Superfine SW Merino, 106yds/97m per 3.53oz/100g skein). Shown in Baby Got Black. Second sample knit in Bread and Butter Bun (100% US Merino, 130yds/118m per 3.53/100g skein). Shown in Jade Cove.

If substituting yarn, I suggest a bulky weight wool yarn with some memory. A subtle heather, tweed or a solid will show off the pattern best, and a wool or wool blend will give the look and feel of the original.

Gauge: 12 sts/17 rounds per 4”/10cm in body pattern, 13 sts/17 rounds in 4”/10cm in 1x1 rib on brim, which stretches when worn. If using yarn with less memory, be sure to adjust needle size as needed so brim gauge is a bit smaller than body gauge.

Needles: US#10/6mm needles, or size to get gauge. 16”/40.5cm circulars for body and DPNs for crown.

Sizes:

18(20,22)”/45.75(50.75,56)cm circumference.

About 9.5”/24.25 with brim folded, 11”/28cm unfolded.

Hat stretches when worn. Choose the size just smaller than your actual head circumference for a snug fit.

Yardage:

85(105,125)yds/77(96,115)m bulky weight yarn needed.
