Shruff's End

$8.00

The Shruff's End cocktail combines both Scotch and Apple Brandy, using Benedictine to tie the flavors together in a way that brings out a delicious smoked apple essence. This reminded me of how the heather in these yarns really tie the colors together and add depth to the texture so beautifully. (I don't always have a clear story to share about the name, but I do this time!)

My vision this time was a vest with a pronounced bookish vibe, but I wanted to make it a little more interesting, so I chose cables that look somewhat like a classic honeycomb, but really are not.

The lines here are a little unusual, crisply folding to and fro as they climb up the body. The effect is more delicate, a bit flatter and boxy, and they really catch your eye in a yarn that allows them to shine.

Keeping the pattern simple, I decided to play with an accent color - as I didn't want to waste the leftover Jonn Arbon Yarnadelic Worsted from my Plymouth Gin Hat, released back in 2023. The little flecks of rust in this deep blue heathered shade (Bada Di) picked up the orange in my John Arbon Harvest Hues (Russet) beautifully - and the Russet has some blues and greens in there that reach right back into the blue and bring it out as well.

Given all the stunning color options over at John Arbon, there's a pair of colors just waiting for you - especially since they've just released a few more amazing shades of Yarnadelic! However, if you don't have all day to dream and prefer looking at some ready-made options, there are also kits for Shruff's End!

Yarn:

Background: John Arbon Harvest Hues Worsted (33% Bluefaced Leicester/33% Falklands Merino/33% Zwartbles, 218yds/200m per 3.5oz/100g skein). Color: Russet.

Accent: John Arbon Yarnadelic Worsted (100% Falklands Corriedale, 236yds/216m per 3.5oz/100g skein). Color: Badi Da.

You can use two colors in one of the above yarns or mix the two bases as I did.

If substituting yarn, use a worsted weight fiber that works to gauge. Swatch in both cable and ribbed hem pattern to be sure the motif shows up in your yarn, to familiarize yourself with the pattern and to check gauge. A heather or tweed shade will allow you to match colors beautifully. Use a wool fiber with some memory for ease of working the cables and for beautiful stitch definition once your vest is blocked.

Gauge: 24 sts/28 rows per 4"/10cm in cable pattern and in rib at hem. 22 sts/28 rows in rib at button band and armholes. Gauge based on final, blocked fabric.

Needles: US#7/4.5mm needles for body, button band, and armhole trim. US#5/3.75mm needles to match gauge at hem. Long circular needle for body and button band, and preferred needle for working small circumference around armhole.

Sizes:

36.75(40.25,43.5,46.75,50.25)(53.5,56.75,60.25,63.5)”

93.25(102.25,110.5,118.75,127.75)(136,144.25,153,161.25)cm

Sizes reflect bust circumference worn closed, in final, blocked fabric. Choose the size that allows for the ease you want. Shown worn with 4”/10cm positive ease.

Yardage:

550(600,650,700,800)(850,950,1050,1150)yds/505(550,595,640,735)(780,870,960,1055)m of Background Color needed.

175(175,175,200,200)(200,200,225,225)yds/160(160,160,185,185)(185,185,205,205)m of Accent Color needed.

Yardage reflects fit shown in pattern, plus about 10%.

Modifications to pattern or substitute yarn may affect the above estimates, so adjust as needed.
