Rum Runner

$8.00

These beautiful cables feature deep, alternating Vs, combined with smaller twists for added texture. They are bold and crisp and gorgeous in a classic worsted wool, and I they worked perfectly into a striking crown detail.

With all the bold patterning up top, I used a folded 1x1 brim down below. This not only provided some delicate contrast, but the deep fold gives you a bit of control over the final depth of your hat and the ability to adjust how you like to wear it.

Notes are included in the pattern on where you can alter the fit on this design. These cables allow for less modification than some patterns, but there are still tricks up my sleeve.

As always, the cable instructions are both charted and written out.

Yarn: Magpie Fibers Nest Worsted (100% non-SW Corriedale wool, 210yds/192m per 3.53oz/100g skein); samples knit in Magpie (blue) and Twilight Bronze (greenish brown).

If using a substitute yarn to work pattern as written, I suggest a similar worsted weight wool to the Nest, or a wool blend yarn with good memory and a round, even fiber that will show off a cable well. A subtle heather, tweed, or solid colorway will work best, and a wool or wool blend will give the look and feel of the original.

Gauge: Cable pattern: 24 sts/26 rounds per 4”/10cm. Ribbed brim: 22 sts/28 rounds per 4”/10cm. Gauges are based on final blocked fabric, laid flat.

Needles: US#7/4.5mm and US#6/4mm needles, or sizes to get gauge. 16”/40.5cm circulars for body and DPNs in larger size only for crown.

Sizes:

16.75(20,23.25)”/42.5(50.75,59)cm circumference around head.

About 8(8,9.75)”/20.25(20.25,24.75)cm deep with brim folded, and 10(10,12)”/25.5(25.5,30.5)cm unfolded from cast on to center of crown.

I suggest choosing the size with 1-2”/2.5-5cm of negative ease around head for a snug-fitting hat.

Yardage:

185(215,250)yds

170(195,230)m worsted weight yarn

If substituting yarn or modifying hat, yardage may vary. The 20”/50.75 size uses a full skein of Nest, so plan accordingly.
