Mazagran

$8.00

When the weather turns warm, sometimes still want a chunky-looking layer on a breezy afternoon or evening. There's just something about a thick, lightweight cardi over a tee or tank that seems so effortless.

As long as it's soft and lofty and lightweight, right? I took these skeins of Matiz out of the box and knew I had the perfect fabric for my easy summer chunky knit! Simple lines and textured stripes highlight the subtle heather and soft fiber in this satisfying yarn beautifully.

I decided on a basic silhouette, worn short with a bit of ease.

The sleeves have some extra room in them, and I chose top-down construction with shaped shoulders for the cardi, as this design loves a little slouch.

If you're wondering about the name, Mazagran is an iced coffee drink. It's often served in Portugal with espresso, lemon, mint, and rum - all shades that match perfectly with this colorway - a soft brown with hints of yellows, greens, and a touch of burgundy!

You begin the cardigan with the upper back, worked flat from neckline to armholes and increased along each shoulder.

Fronts are picked up along the slanted sides of the back, worked over the shoulders, and shaped downwards to armholes. At armholes, fronts and back are joined so the body can be finished in one piece to hem. Sleeves are picked up around the armholes and worked in the round to the cuffs.

Button bands are picked up along each front once body is complete, and collar is picked up around neckline and worked last.

As always, I designed this with options to customize your fit.

The textured pattern has a flexible stitch count, and the silhouette is easily modified. Notes are added within the pattern at places where you may want to adjust your shaping or measurements.

Yarn: Retrosaria Rosa Pomar Matiz (100% Portuguese wool, 219yds/200m per 3.5oz/100g skein). Color: 04.

If substituting yarn, choose a round fiber with good stitch definition. A subtle variegation in color, a heather, or a tweed is beautiful in this texture. Yarn should work to pattern gauge and allow the texture to show up. Swatch in both the textured pattern and in k2/p2 ribbing and be sure your fabric has an easy drape for a comfortable fit.

Gauge: 16 sts and 26 rnds/rows in 4”/10cm in textured stripe pattern, 18 sts and 24 rnds/rows in 4”/10cm in 2x2 rib on trim. Gauge is based on final, blocked fabric.

Needles: US#9/5.5mm needles, or size to get gauge. I recommend long circulars for body, button bands, and collar and preferred method for small circumferences on sleeves.

Sizes:

36.5(39,42.5,46,48.5,52.5)(56.5,62,64.5,68)”

92.75(99,108,116.75,123.25,133.25)(143.5,157.5,163.75,172.75)cm

Measured around bust, buttoned. Sizes based on final, blocked fabric. For fit shown, I suggest about 4-6”/10-15.25cm of positive ease, based on actual bust.

Yardage:

950(1050,1150,1250,1350,1450)(1550,1600,1650,1750)yds

870(960,1055,1145,1235,1325)(1415,1465,1510,1600)m

Heavy worsted or Aran weight yarn.
