High Rye

$8.00

I like to begin my fall lineup each year with something small and satisfying, so say hello to High Rye - a quick hat in gorgeous yarn.

The High Rye Hat features bold lace medallions and a big, cozy brim. It's simple and geometric and feels incredibly classic in a worsted weight wool. Curved lines and just a bit of texture in the motif create balanced and elegant proportions here.

The ribbed brim flows right into the motif, so it can be knit shallow and worn without a fold if you prefer. The lace detail is just enough to stand out, without being fussy. And the squishy crown plays off the shaping near the top, bunching up perfectly in sections around the center.

A bouncy, round Merino and Corriedale blend gives the lace some heft, preventing the lace hat feeling too delicate for winter wear. Instead, it's got a little chunk to it, which will go perfectly next to a wool coat.

I liked this one so much that once I finished, I reached for another skein and knit it again. It's my fond farewell to a favorite fiber.

Yarn: Hudson + West Co. Forge (70% US Merino, 30% US Corriedale wool, 235yds/215m per 3.53oz/100g skein). Samples in Cabernet and Aspen. Discontinuing as of December 2025.

If substituting yarn, I suggest a round, bouncy fiber similar to the Forge. Blends with Merino, Corriedale, Cormo, or Rambouillet may provide a similar fabric. Substitute yarns or changes to pattern may affect both gauge and quantity needed.

Gauge: 22 sts/28 rounds per 4"/10 cm in lace pattern on larger needle and 24sts/30 rounds in rib on smaller needle. Gauge is based on final, blocked fabric.

Needles: US#7/4.5mm for hat body and US#6/4mm needles for brim, or size(s) to get gauge. I suggest 16”/40.5cm circulars in both sizes and DPNS in larger size only for crown.

Sizes:

16.25(18.25,20)”/41.25(46.25,50.75)cm around body of hat

14.75(16.75,18)”/37.5(42.5,45.75)cm around ribbed brim, laid flat

Hat is about 10.25”/26cm deep from cast-on edge to top of crown, unfolded.

Hat stretches to fit an 18(20,22)”/45.75(50.75,56)cm head.

Yardage:

175(200,225)yds/160(183,205)m of worsted-weight yarn needed.
