Ginger Beer Mitts

$7.00

Since it’s quite difficult to track down the original Sport Weight Rambouillet from Knitted Wit Yarns these days, I suggest using Recollect Sport from the Farmers Daughter Fibers for these mitts.

The Ginger Beer Mitts came out of the Lantern Moon Retreat, as I went to teach and wanted to design with yarn from a local dyer. Lorajean Kelly’s sport weight Rambouillet in this color was just so fun, that I wanted gold medallions on my hands.

I decided to play with ribs, cables AND lace on these. The medallion motif that moves from one side of the hand to the other, and the stockinette and ribbed sections play off of one another. As with most of my patterns, the motif is simpler than you think - so it’s fun to knit and quick enough that you can work on them for a few nights and be wearing them by next week.

Yarn: The Farmer’s Daughter Fibers Recollect Sport, (100% White and Black Rambouillet, 185yds/169m per 2oz/57g skein). Original yellow mitts were worked in discontinued Knitted Wit Welterweight, (100% Rambouillet wool, 350yds/320m per skein).

If substituting yarn, I suggest another sport weight wool that will wear well over time, as mitts need to be used and a delicate fabric will either pull or tear. Stay away from anything with too much texture or variegation, as the design would be lost. A yarn without drape will keep the fit and shape longer, and in terms of wear, a rustic or heartier yarn will take the constant use of mitts better than a soft or delicate fiber will.

Gauge: 24 stitches and 32 rounds per 4”/10cm in stockinette, 28 stitches and 32 rounds per 4”/10cm in 1x1 rib.

Needles: US#4/3.5mm

Sizes:

7.5(8,8.5)”/19(20.25,21.5)cm circumference around wrist

11”/28cm deep from top to bottom edge

Yardage:

About 200yds/183m of sport weight yarn.
