Frisky Witch is a simple ribbed vest, with just a touch of cables, but the magic that those cables bring here is just perfect, isn’t it?

I wanted something with an easy rhythm - so this motif is mostly ribbing, with cable crosses on only a few chart rows. I designed the top with shaping on the sides, so modifications are easy, and ease is added before you get to your bust. For the shoulders | wanted just the smallest hint of a cap, so you can wear this without a shirt underneath. Plus, I shaped the neckline so different neckline treatments can easily be substituted.

I never really choose black yarn, but once I had these skeins, I wanted to design a wardrobe staple. With that in mind, Frisky Witch can be worn either with or without a shirt underneath, and this simple cable pattern is classic enough to go with anything from a patterned dress (as shown) to a white button down and jeans. Although I think it's also bold and modern enough to feel different. I also love that this kind of garment is so easy to wear under a jacket without overheating!

Frisky Witch is knit from the bottom up in the round to armholes and then split into front and back pieces, which are knit flat to shoulders. Once shoulders are seamed, stitches are picked up around the armholes and neckline for the cowl neck and armhole trim. Notes are included in pattern for modifying length or body circumference and for altering side shaping or neckline and shoulders. I've also included information on creating either a turtleneck or collared option. Cable instructions are both charted and written.

Yarn: West Yorkshire Spinners Croft Aran, 100% Shetland Island Wool (182yds/166m per 100g skein). Sample knit in Voxter 099.

If substituting yarn, use a heavy worsted or light Aran wool in a solid, tweed or semisolid color. Swatch and block to check gauge. Yarn quantity may vary with modifications, and different fibers may behave differently in ribbing. I do not suggest using superwash yarn, given its added memory. If your yarn has a lot of memory, choose a larger size with more positive ease or add extra shaping as noted above to compensate for possible gauge issues at bust.

Gauge: Each 24-st cable panel is 4”/10cm wide. Ribbed side sts: 24sts/28rows per 4”/10cm.

Needles: US#8/5mm needles, or size to get gauge. US#7/4.5mm 16”/40.5cm needle used on armhole ribbing and to pick up stitches around cowl neck.
