Cerulean Sour 2, The Vest

$8.00

This vest was inspired by the cerulean blue sweater featured in both of the Devil Wears Prada movies! For those of you who have not watched, the pullover from the first movie is cut into a vest in the second, and worn much like I've got it styled here.

Of all the fantastic outfits in the more recent movie, it was this vest that had to own - and because I'm a knitter, I could do it!

My version features a few more finishing details, is knit in a heavier (and much nicer) yarn than the original, and features a cable that the Casual Corner would never have used - but my more polished version is exactly what I had in mind and I love it.

The overall cable pattern is long and elegant, with a slipped stitch or two hidden in there to make sure the texture shows up on your fabric. The cable motif transitions right out of the ribbed hem and is perfectly centered at the V-neck (on all sizes) for a crisp, tailored vibe. Side panels allow for easy modification, and the whole vest works beautifully as a wardrobe staple I will be reaching for often this season.

As always, notes are in the pattern on how and where to modify things for a more personal fit. The cable motif is both charted and written out. The vest is worked from the bottom up in the round, and split into front and back pieces at armholes. These are shaped while working flat to shoulder and then seamed before neckline and armhole trim are picked up and worked in the round.

Yarn: A Verb For Keeping Warm Bread and Butter Pretzel Worsted, (100% US Merino Wool, 130yds/118m per 1.76oz/50g skein). Color shown is Ballpoint.

If substituting, make sure your yarn shows the pattern off well and creates a fabric that will work when worn. Pretzel is a round, bouncy wool without too much drape or weight. I do not suggest a yarn with visible color shifts or variegation as the pattern detail would be lost. I don’t suggest fibers with pronounced drape for a cabled garment, as they may grow over time.

Gauge: 20 sts and 28 rnds/rows per 4”/10cm in pattern. 22 sts and 28 rnds/rows in 1x1 rib.

Gauges are based on final, blocked fabric.

Needles: US#7/4.5mm needle, or size needed for gauge.

I suggest long circulars for the body and shorter circulars to complete V-neck and armhole ribbing.

Sizes:

37(40.25,43.5,46.5)(49.75,53,56.25)(59.5,62.5,65.75)”/

94(102.25,110.5,118)(126.25,134.5,143)(151.25,158.75,

167)cm, based on bust circumference in final, blocked fabric. Shown worn with 5”/12.75cm of positive ease.

Yardage:

750(800,850,900)(1000,1050,1100)(1200,1250,1300)yds

685(730,780,825)(915,960,1005)(1100,1145,1190)m

Estimates include about 10% extra, based on test knit feedback. A round worsted-weight yarn works best if substituting.
